Growers apply a significant amount of commercial fertilizers to their cropping systems based upon soil testing results, providing plants with essential plant nutrients to boost growth. While this results in increased yields, there are some drawbacks to solely relying on this practice.
The major repercussions include nutrient leaching and the associated effects seen when nutrients are moved out of the root zone.
Nutrient leaching occurs when an excess amount of water-soluble ions (whether positively or negatively charged) are dissolved in soil water, instead of being bound to particles of soil or organic matter. As water moves through the soil profile because of irrigation or natural precipitation events it pushes these water-soluble nutrients downward through the soil profile, out of the root zone, and into groundwater. Thus making the nutrients unavailable for plant uptake, contaminating water sources, and reducing economic returns for growers.
The Microbe Plus® range of GrowGreen products is a unique fusion of biological components and conventional NPK fertilizers (qualifying them as both biostimulants and fertilisers), thus making the entire line ideal for both horticultural and broadacre crops. They also contain a comprehensive blend of beneficial bacteria and fungi for soil enhancement.
Both Microbe Plus™ Hi-NS and Microbe Plus™ PBT/NPK have been analysed by independent soil testing laboratories to determine nitrogen nutrient retention under a high leaching conditions. The purpose of the analysis is to compare GrowGreen biofertilizers against inorganic nitrogen fertilizer sources to determine which better maintains available nitrogen forms in the root zone over a longer period of time.
Microbe Plus™ Hi-NS is predominantly a fermented Ammonium while Microbe Plus™ PBT/NPK is predominantly fermented Nitrate. The analysis measures total nitrogen
Testing was conducted using sand as there are no colloids for the nutrients to attach to, providing the greatest leaching loss potential amongst soil types.
While only the leaching loss reduction of nitrogen was measured, the results can be extrapolated across other leachable nutrients such as phosphate.
Microbe Plus™ Hi-NS
World-accredited laboratories of SGS conducted independent product-testing assays on Microbe Plus™ Hi-NS using a 6% ammonium sulfate solution as a control.
When applying Microbe Plus™ Hi-NS to 30 cm of sand and flooding the area with water, 49.3% of the nitrogen in Microbe Plus™ Hi-NS is retained and not washed away. Only 9.8% of nitrogen was retained in the same experiment with the control solution of ammonium sulfate (Figure 1).
Microbe Plus™ PBT/NPK
An independent soil testing lab, Control Laboratories in California, conducted analysis on Microbe Plus™ PBT/NPK using an inorganic, chemical fertilizer as the control.
In the analysis using the sand substrate, 63% of the nitrogen was retained and not washed away compared to only 12% with the control solution (Figure 2). In the analysis using soil in the packed columns, 73% of the nitrogen was retained using Microbe Plus™ PBT/NPK; the control retained 44% of the nitrogen (Figure 3).
The Growgreen fermentation process essentially transforms simple chemical nutrients into more complex biological forms that resist leaching because they are no longer in ionic forms. The beneficial microorganisms in Microbe Plus™ Hi-NS and Microbe Plus™ PBT/NPK produce different substances: organic acids, vitamins, growth hormones (auxins) — in the form of a “sticky” substances that bind nutrients to particles in the soil stratum. Additionally, many of these compounds help chelate cations like ammonium to reduce their chemical availability to dissolve in water. The ability to bind nutrients in the sand and the reduced ability of the nutrients to dissolve in water help to reduce leaching in soil.
